About Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society
The Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) provides culturally grounded health and wellness services to Indigenous people living in Vancouver. Our programs support community connection, cultural continuity, and holistic wellness through a variety of health, cultural, and community initiatives.
VAHS is developing an Indigenous Garden space that will support food security, cultural learning, and community wellness. This outdoor space will serve as a welcoming environment for community members to gather, learn about traditional and local food growing practices, and strengthen connections to land and culture.
Position Overview
VAHS is seeking a temporary part-time Gardener to support the development and maintenance of our Indigenous Garden from March 2026 to November 2026.
The Gardener will assist with preparing garden beds, planting vegetables and plants, maintaining the garden space, and supporting seasonal garden activities. This role will work collaboratively with staff and community members to help nurture a healthy and productive garden environment.
Key Responsibilities

Prepare garden beds and soil for planting

Plant vegetables, herbs, and other plants throughout the growing season

Maintain the garden through regular watering, weeding, pruning, and harvesting

Support seasonal garden preparation and general garden upkeep

Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming garden space

Work collaboratively with staff and community members participating in garden activities
Qualifications

Experience with gardening, urban gardening, or small-scale food growing

Knowledge of vegetable gardening and seasonal planting in the Lower Mainland is an asset

Ability to work independently and manage tasks in an outdoor environment

Comfortable performing light physical work such as lifting soil bags, bending, and general gardening tasks

Interest in community-based work and creating welcoming outdoor spaces
Schedule
Approximately 10 hours per week, with flexible scheduling depending on the needs of the garden and seasonal activities.
