- Assigned co-location at Neighbourhood House or Community Centre in Vancouver
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (some flexibility required for evening programming)
Wage: $29.70/hour (starting) + benefits and pension
About VAHS
Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) is a not-for-profit organization located in the Downtown Eastside for over 30 years. Programs are designed by and for urban Indigenous people to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Our services include a Primary Care Clinic, Dental Clinic, Cultural Programming, and Indigenous Early Years (IEY).
About the Position
The VAHS Indigenous Early Years (IEY) Child and Family Support Program is a family-centered program that works in partnership with parents and caregivers to support families with children. While services are directed towards the child, the Family Support Worker (FSW) provides a wide variety of supports to the family, including peer support, advocacy, parenting skill development, life skills training, and linking families with community-based activities and resources.
This position requires travel, home visits, and management of a heavy caseload. Work outside of regular office hours may be required.
Qualifications
- Recognized diploma in human services OR equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum two years’ work experience with Indigenous people
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, issues, and community supports
- Strong assessment, supportive counselling, and advocacy skills
- Ability to teach life skills (e.g., budgeting, home management, time management)
- Knowledge of early childhood development, child welfare, and social services
- Ability to build strong relationships with families and community professionals
- Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
- Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility, discretion, and strong organizational skills
- Knowledge of group facilitation techniques an asset
- Knowledge of Nobody’s Perfect Parenting program an asset
- Valid BC Driver’s License and reliable vehicle an asset
