Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) was established in 1991 to provide culturally safe and trauma-informed healthcare for Indigenous people living in Vancouver. Our organization delivers a broad spectrum of health and wellness services that address the social determinants of health through an Indigenous lens.

Located in the Downtown Eastside, VAHS serves some of the most marginalized communities in Canada. Our work supports individuals living with overlapping challenges rooted in poverty, colonialism, and trauma.


The Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Finance Controller to join our leadership team. This role is responsible for overseeing all financial operations across the organization and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, accounting standards, and internal policies.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Finance Controller plays a critical role in advancing the financial health and stability of VAHS. This is a key leadership position for a dedicated finance professional who is passionate about supporting Indigenous health and wellness.

Preference will be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle accounting and financial operations for VAHS and its related entities

  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and funding agencies

  • Develop and implement financial policies, internal controls, and accounting procedures

  • Supervise finance staff and foster a collaborative, accountable work environment

  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and Indigenous funding requirements

  • Coordinate external audits and year-end financial processes

  • Support strategic decision-making by providing financial insight and analysis

  • Monitor financial performance and recommend improvements


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA designation preferred

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in finance, ideally in a non-profit setting

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit funding compliance

  • Proficient in financial software, including Microsoft Dynamics, Penny Payroll, and Microsoft Office

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills

  • Experience supervising finance teams in fast-paced environments

  • Audit experience at a Big Six or equivalent firm considered an asset
