Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) Medical Clinic, located at 449 East Hastings St, provides primary health care to clients, with a focus on urban Indigenous peoples, their families, and residents of the Downtown Eastside. In addition to full-scope primary care, our clinic offers OAT, mental health, and HIV care. We are fortunate to also offer a robust cultural program with Indigenous cultural events occurring almost daily for clients and staff.

VAHS is seeking physicians interested in temporary/locum work, starting immediately with hiring ongoing. Payment is at the DoBC Sessional Payment rate, and shifts are 9-12:30 or 1-4:30 daily. We have extended hours on Wednesdays until 8 pm for a youth clinic and are also open Saturdays from 9-2. The clinic uses OSCAR EMR and uses a convenient online scheduling system for shift pick-ups/trades (MetricAid).

FUNCTION

Reporting to the Medical Coordinator, the physician will play a critical role in supporting the ongoing primary care needs of urban Indigenous peoples and residents of the Downtown Eastside.  They are responsible for providing direct clinical services to patients who present or are referred for their medical care. They foster a collaborative inter-professional practice environment that enhances client-centered services within the associated clinics/sites/programs. They work within a self-directed team of physicians and other inter-professional colleagues to achieve excellence in client-centered care.

In addition, the physician will:

  • Provide team-based care along with an interdisciplinary team (Elder/NP/MD/RN/SW/allied health).
  • Provide substance use services, assessments, supports, and opiate agonist treatment.
  • Provide trauma-informed and culturally safe care to clients with multiple complex health care needs (i.e. HIV, Hep C, mental health/substance use) and psychosocial barriers.
  • Provide learning opportunities and support for family practice residents.
  • Provide pro-active chronic disease management by utilizing EMR supports, PSP supports, QI initiatives, and maximizing use and scope of interdisciplinary team members.
  • Take part in interdisciplinary team engagement events/opportunities.
  • Take part in educational opportunities to advance practice and client outcomes.
  • Participate in and support Indigenous cultural events in the clinic.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure, in good standing, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, as well as current Canadian Medical Protection Association, or equivalent, coverage. Eligibility for a faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia School of Medicine is required. Current Opiate Agonist Treatment prescriber exemption is ideal or willingness to obtain an exemption.

  • Comprehensive family practice background; and
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team setting
