Position Summary

The Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Pow Wow Cultural Lead to support the planning and execution of our annual Father’s Day Pow Wow (FDPW) on June 21, 2026.

This role will work closely with the internal Coordinator and VAHS leadership to ensure that all aspects of the Pow Wow are carried out in a good way, with strong adherence to cultural protocols, traditions, and community expectations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on Pow Wow protocols, structure, and flow of the day
  • Lead the development of the event schedule/agenda, including Grand Entry, dance categories, and special honourings
  • Support coordination and communication with drum groups, MC, Arena Director, and other key roles
  • Ensure all cultural elements are delivered respectfully and appropriately
  • Advise on prize categories, honoraria, and competition structure
  • Be present on the day of the event to guide execution and support problem-solving in real time
  • Work collaboratively with the VAHS Coordinator on logistics, vendors, and overall event flow

Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong knowledge and lived experience with Pow Wow protocols and practices
  • Experience organizing or supporting Pow Wows or large cultural gatherings
  • Established relationships within the Pow Wow community (drum groups, dancers, MCs, etc.) is an asset
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community members
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Reliable and able to commit to pre-event planning and full-day event attendance

  • Contract Type: Honorarium-based
  • Event Date: June 21, 2026
  • Planning Period: May – June 2026 (flexible, as needed)
  • Honorarium to be determined based on experience
