Program Overview

The Women’s Mobile Primary Care (WMPC) program addresses the pressing health care needs of women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, particularly those experiencing homelessness, physical health concerns, mental health and/or substance use challenges.

Through a mobile health unit, the WMPC program provides accessible, culturally safe and responsive health care services directly to women in the community. The program aims to reduce geographic, scheduling and cultural barriers to accessing health care.

About the Position

The Women’s Mobile Primary Care Van Driver is responsible for the safe and reliable transportation of the mobile clinic team to outreach sites throughout the Downtown Eastside.

The Van Driver operates the mobile clinic vehicle, ensures it is clean, stocked and maintained in good working condition, and supports the day-to-day transportation and logistical needs of the program.

Working closely with clinical and non-clinical team members, the Van Driver helps ensure the WMPC team can provide timely, safe and responsive services while maintaining a professional and supportive environment for staff and clients.

Key Responsibilities

Transportation and Logistics

  • Safely operate the mobile clinic van and transport the health care team to and from designated outreach sites on scheduled clinic days.
  • Ensure timely arrival and departure from outreach sites to support the program schedule.
  • Ensure the van is appropriately stocked with necessary supplies before leaving for site visits.
  • Follow all vehicle safety protocols and ensure the vehicle remains in good working condition through routine checks and maintenance.
  • Transport team members for WMPC supply runs as required.

Client and Staff Support

  • Assist with safe boarding and exiting of the vehicle and provide support with patient transportation when required.
  • Transport staff to purchase or pick up program supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a respectful, professional and supportive environment for clients and staff.

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Conduct regular checks of the vehicle’s cleanliness, mechanical condition and supply inventory.
  • Promptly report maintenance or repair concerns to the Program Manager/Supervisor.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and sanitize high-touch areas as required.
  • Take the vehicle for scheduled servicing and repairs when necessary.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Adhere to applicable driving laws, safety requirements and WMPC operational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle mileage, fuel usage and any incidents or accidents.
  • Assist with required vehicle maintenance records, fuel logs and other transportation or logistics documentation.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Communicate clearly with the Program Manager/Supervisor, team members and other relevant stakeholders regarding transportation logistics, scheduling changes and any concerns.
  • Participate in team meetings and debriefs as required.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with logistical tasks such as loading and unloading program supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Manager/Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Self-identifies as a woman, including trans women and Two Spirit femmes.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record.
  • Previous experience driving larger vehicles, particularly in an urban environment, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and related reporting is an asset.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality when interacting with clients and team members.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Previous experience working with marginalized communities, particularly within health care or social services, is an asset.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry program supplies and other items as required.

Working Conditions

  • Part-time position at 0.3 FTE, approximately 12 hours per week.
  • Scheduled Tuesday through Thursday, with flexibility based on program needs.
  • Regular travel throughout Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, with occasional local travel as required.
  • Work hours may vary based on the transportation and operational needs of the WMPC program.
